Mentor or Mom
Hey my peeps!
Well… it’s been a while…
I do actually enjoy blogging, but I forget to do it.
I’ve recently realized I am now a mentor. Which sounds crazy to me. I’m a mentor. I’ve wondered when this day would come. I really do love it.
I was lucky enough to have a great mentor, I've actually had a few. When I first started out in the industry I was like a sponge. I couldn’t get enough. I would watch, practice, ask questions, always trying things out. Whether shit went sideways or not. A lot of times it did. I learn from my mistakes. Its important to course correct. That’s how you improve your craft. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.
Sometimes I looked at my mentors as motherly figures or “aunt” like figures. In a respectful kind of way, but I also felt like there was a line that shouldn’t be crossed. There’s a level of professional guidance and emotional guidance that is hard to decifer sometimes. It can be intertwined into one another and we can lose sight of what were really here for.
Am I babysitting or am I teaching? That’s when the line is crossed. The goal is-take what you've learned and make it into your own. Use the tools that have been given to you. Do it well and improve it if you can.
Subconsciously you look for someone like yourself. Someone that will take extreme value and interest in your talents, tips and tricks. Someone with great work ethic. Most of all Passion.
It's funny… while teaching someone something, you can actually learn as well. There have been many of times where I’m explaining something and until that very moment I never realized why I did it that way. It’s one of the most enjoyable parts.
When something “clicks” and the eyeballs get wide, thats what I love the most. Sometimes I just yell things out because I wish I knew it when I was learning. “FINGERS PARALLEL!!!” This would've prevented a few fuck ups in my early stages.
Feedback. I always ask if theres anything else I can do to explain things better. Seeing the students outlook on the lesson. Asking what they learned. If what I said or did was helpful and how they would have gone about it.
I’m excited to see what the future brings. If this is just the beginning. What’s instore must be huge!
Here to learn, here to teach. Here to create beauty. The feeling. The lifestyle.
Love yall thanks for reading!
Go do what you love!
